Laziness and Tights

Okay, I apologize for lacking on the posts lately. Yesterday was my last day of work (I put in my two weeks notice earlier in the month, and phew, it's a load off my shoulders) but it was kind of hectic trying to get my desk organized and to give things to the appropriate people to get the work done. And believe me, I could've used those two weeks to devote to my desk alone - it was a horrendous mess and I was shocked when I actually saw that it was made out of wood, I hadn't seen it in so long. But then class the past two days went late and I was exhausted. (Even though it was very eye-opening last night. Halli, a drug counselor in Punxsutawney came to talk to our class and let's just say what kids are doing as far as drugs these days is SCARY. Just google "jenkem." I dare you to not be scared for your (unborn) children. It's not an urban legend, and it exists especially in rural areas. Culture shock much, Vancouverites?)

So instead, I will address a question raised by faithful reader Amanda:
Speaking of legwear, I know that you dig tights, but what about leggings? How do you feel when people wear them as pants? Taking it a step further, I heard about jeggings today (jeans that are leggings). What are your thoughts on those?

Well, Amanda, I'm glad you asked that question. Anna and I may not agree on mixing patterns, but we definitely agree on wearing tights or leggings as pants: wrong.Wrong.WRONG. I do dig tights, with appropriate legwear, though. Tights with shorts or skirts or a long enough dress is completely acceptable in my opinion. However, tights or leggings are not okay with a shirt because, hey, they aren't pants! Think about it this way - if you can wear your skirt or dress without leggings, then it's okay to wear them with in order to spice up your outfit, or to get more wear out of your clothing in the winter months. Hey, I wore shorts in winter but was warm enough because of tights.

However, if you wouldn't walk out of the house because your butt would be hanging out if you weren't wearing tights, then don't do it - nobody wants to see your lady bits. Then again, Fantasia Barrino, your house was in danger of being foreclosed, so maybe you couldn't afford pants. What's somebody else's excuse? Yeah, I'm looking at you, Sienna Miller. True, Sienna, perhaps you were too busy being a home wrecker to stop at the Pants Store. Or maybe you were too busy hating on Pittsburgh (That Nick Nolte picture at the bottom is just a bonus). But whatevs, Sienna, Pittsburgh hates you, too....Jerk. And by the way, false, I was in many a bars when I was underage and it wasn't that hard. Uh, you know, I was sipping water and diet cokes, that's it. Honest.

Anyways, let's move on to something with which I agree - Jeggings. They are SO comfy, people. And while I don't own any because of how hideous my thighs look in them, they are a pretty fantastic invention. Jeans that incorporate the comfort of cottony goodness - Perfection. So, if you have nice, non-jiggly thighs, or find a super flattering pair of jean leggings, please buy a pair - and let me know where you found them.

Preppy like the UES

Today, Will Best told me my outfit was rockin' and then took on photographer duties for another computer lab photo shoot. I do enjoy taking my pictures in the rooms reserved for graduate student studying, as it really breaks up the monotony of procrastination, achievement, or pretension. Though I guess taking someone's picture for their fashion blog falls pretty securely in the category of procrastination.

Do I have some crazy eyes in the picture below of what?
Today's outfit was not what I had planned on wearing, but when I accidently overslept and was feeling a bit stressed and overwhelmed, I knew that I needed an outfit that would suggest studious and dedicated, hoping that it would inspire me to be studious and dedicated.

This skirt was 70% off, or something ridiculous like that, which means I only paid ten dollars for it. Navy, for some reason, feels like a pretty preppy color, so pairing the skirt with a blouse, my argyle sweater vest, and loafers seemed like the most studious decision I could make.
Because I was running late, I didn't have time to consider jewelry, but I'd definitely like to add some the next time I wear this outfit. I'm thinking my gold locket and gold bangle bracelet? Classic accessories for a pretty classic look?
I had a pretty productive day, and I think the outfit helped. Maybe navy is the real power blue when dressing for success.

I'm going home for Easter (yay!), so probably only one more Vancouver post before I fly back. Look out for some Easter colors and maybe even a picture of Libby and me together. I know, craziness. xoxo Anna Rae

Harriet the Spy and other mystery novels

Inspired by my new winter coat and trapped indoors by the rain, Erin and I took the sleuthiest of photos, with upturned collars and spying through stacks. Unfortunately, the pictures between stacks were ridiculous and only really of my face, ending up in the digital trash can. The detective theme doesn't really hold up when I'm not wearing the coat, but I think we can all pretend.

The dress is another Target purchase, one I think I'll get a lot of wear out of this summer. I paired it with tights and my strange but surprisingly versatile maroon blouse to work with the darker colors since it certainly isn't summer yet.
Maybe because it's the Monday before a break when my brain is focused on writing papers and marking essays, but this outfit required much less thought than my others. I guess if you really like your pieces, they do the work for you.
I still can't believe I found this coat for twenty dollars. Normally, I don't buy from vintage stores because it tends to be overpriced and takes away the fun of thrifting, but this was an epic find. I can't wait to wear it in the fall -- I have so many scarves I'm waiting to pair it with and I think it's just begging for a neutral tone beret.

Scheduling Conflicts and Grilled Cheese Sandwiches

I love this sweater - and now I realize that I say that all the time about how much I love this, or love that, but really if I wear something, I love it. I've had this sweater since freshman year of college - I'm 23 now. Every time I wear it I get compliments though and it really is just so cute. I don't usually venture into the lime green palette, but I just can't part with this.

Today was scheduling for summer classes - holy annoying with all the different conflicts and whatnot. And it was a really long day - I worked 9-5 and had class from 6-840, but it ran long so it was more like 9. But thankfully, tomorrow is my last day of work so that will be a nice break. And (!) I had a grilled cheese sandwich for dinner tonight when I got home. Mmmm, delicious.

Until tomorrow. Libby

Stop Mumbling, Seth Rogen.

Why am I laughing? Because Beth - my friend, past roommate, and today's photographer - directed a lengthy photo shoot on Granville Island today in an attempt to spy on maybe Seth Rogen.

Maybe Seth Rogen, you say? Let me elaborate -- Today while sitting outside of the Public Market, Beth and I noticed someone sitting behind us who looked exactly like Seth Rogen, but it was a little hard to tell as he was covering his face with his newsboy cap. Beth was pretty convinced, but I was skeptical -- then we heard him laugh. Yes, it was that odd, distinct laugh we all know and love. Now, if you know me at all, you know that anything Judd Appatow touches, especially in the world of television, immediately fills my heart with glee, so now that Beth was completely convinced and I was 85% convinced, we wanted to geek out big time. In an attempt to be cool, native Vancouverites, we refrained, and instead sat still hoping to hear what he was talking about, in an effort to find out if it really was him. But, man, let me tell you, maybe Seth Rogen is a mumbler. Speak up, Seth Rogen (if it indeed is you)! Let your fangirls geek out in public.

But on to the outfit, a celebrity in its own mind...
I really based this outfit on the day's activity and the weather, which is I guess how most people dress all the time. Because it was so springy outside, I wanted to wear some pastels, like my pink tights and this new summer cardigan (bought on the super clearance rack, oh yeah).
I wanted the outfit to be casual but kind of cool and interesting, since Granville Island, while essentially just a cute area to wonder and eat and enjoy the view, can also be a collection of strange and artsy people. And who doesn't want to dress to impress the street performers and to fit in with both the art students and the tourists? In an attempt to be fun and interesting, but also casual, I wore my all-time favorite flower headband and mixed patterns in a, I hope, slightly subtler way with the stripes and the tweed. None of the colors in my outfit actually matched, but I thought they worked well together anyway, playing up the idea of spring (even the black and white tweed jacket worked with that because of its pink ribbons).
I really liked how this outfit turned out. It worked perfectly for a day by the water, some thrift shopping, and sushi dinner.

Something to look forward to: Today, Beth and I did a little bit of vintage shopping at Mintage on 4th, where all vintage was twenty dollars or less. I bought a coat that makes me feel like such a sleuth. Look out for it soon!

You know what punkers don't do -- Call themselves punkers.

Sorry Tara, but this post is sadly not about what I wore to Hot Tub Time Machine -- though it would be a great outfit. I have yet to see that movie, but man do I want to. Instead, this is how I toned down my costume-obsessed instincts and dressed a little like a rock star to see the Runaways. I was inspired but how my hair looked like Joan Jett's, just a little less badass.

And aren't these tights amazing? I'm pretty sure they're not from Target, so they are not the Rodarte for Target tights and just some Kohl's copies, but since I bought tights at Kohl's and Target over the course of three days, there is a distinct possibility that I am actually wearing Rodarte tights around.
The location and the color filter of the shots were, like the Runaways, a little like punk rock, but too produced to be actually punk rock. Below is a picture of what the colors actually looked like, but I stuck with mostly gray and black except for the red skirt -- a great St. Vincent de Paul find that actually goes to my knees so is perfect for non-Costume things, like teaching.
(I'm so bad at posing for pictures when I'm trying to be tough and not smile)
I inherited this clutch from my grandmother, and it's one of my favorites. I always loved it when she carried it, and thought it represented everything ladylike from an older generation.
Normally my style is far more twee than punk rock, but I liked the way I was able to make my usual pieces feel slightly more edgy. Your thoughts and judgements on the outfit? The movie? The idea of taking your pictures in an alley by a dumpster to adhere to a certain aesthetic?

Baby Showers bring May Babies

A little back story before a different story. I'm full of stories. (My family would say I'm full of something else, but tough. They don't write this blog, I do.) So the other day I was going through the different fashion blogs I follow and checked out Jessica from What I Wore. Let us check out What I Found...Besides shock, I found basically the same.exact.outfit that I had planned to wear for my sister-in-law's Baby Shower today. How.Awkward. But then, Jessica's post two days later addressed my situation/feelings perfectly! It was not awkward that I planned on wearing something almost identical; as Annie reassured me, the outfit is totally adorable. I cannot wait to thank her for the support by faithfully reenacting "The Sound of Music," dog whistle and all.
Back to the present story. I love Love LOVE this skirt. The silhouette is totally 50s housewife (!!!) and Amanda, my sister-in-law, said that it looked like I should be pushing a vacuum around - hehe. I said I should also be cooking dinner (yeah, right, I don't cook - that's what my mother is for) and tending to the (non-existent) children. I love me some cinched waists. But srsly, I'm obsessed with this skirt and can't wait to style it with a more daring shirt or something and wear it to a picnic (who am I kidding, I've never gone on a picnic) or just to walk around in the summer.
So, like I said, it was my sister-in-law's baby shower today and let-me-to-you, this little girl is going to be adorable and spoiled and precious. She got so many cute outfits and the cutest little 2-piece bathing suit from Amanda's sister, Kim. Needless to say, my brother Michael is none too pleased with her. I swear, he's going to make Baby wear a turtleneck to the beach. Aaaaand, I'm totally stealing the baby when she's born and holding fashion shows when I go down to visit and convince Amanda to take a nap. An outfit a minute. Yep, that's my goal.
I also wore my lovely necklace that Amanda designed and while I technically like Jessica's shoes more than mine with the outfit, I like my necklace more. What do you guys think? And even though this picture is a little blurry at the top, I just liked the angle. And thanks to my mom - she did her best helping me to take my pics today :).

Shoes: Old Navy
Skirt: H & M
Top: Express

OH!!! And (one of) the best part(s) about this skirt - POCKETS. Perfection.

Seaside

To make up for the fact that I didn't post any pictures yesterday, today I wore two different outfits and posed for pictures in each, meaning that I'll have an outfit post for today and tomorrow.

This outfit, Daytime Anna, was received with great acclaim and had bestowed upon it high honors, such as "The Best of Your Blog Photos Yet!" (Erin) and "The Best Dressed at School Today!" (Emer), and we can only conclude that such accolades were thrown about because of how much everyone loves a nautical theme. How much? So much.
This outfit reminds me of the Sound of Music and everyone's favorite musically-inclined and morally upstanding naval officer, Captain Von Trapp. There is even a whistle necklace currently sitting in my Etsy shopping cart so I can wear it with this skirt, dress Libby up in an ugly dress and one of my straw hats and whistle her call, just so she can indignantly inform me that she will not answer to a whistle, as whistles are for dogs and cats, but not for children and certainly not for her.

Will Libby do it? you wonder. But, of course. Libby and I share a rich history with the Sound of Music. On one particular snow day in high school, we put on our snow pants and trudged up to the house of one of the most popular boys in my class and forced him to play in the snow with us (actually we didn't have that kind of power. When he turned us down his mother insisted that he join us), but really just hung outside for about 10 minutes and then made him watch the Sound of Music with us in my basement. Just another anecdote highlighting how terribly popular Libby and I were in high school. But back to an outfit and landscape not quite so tragic...
Seriously, isn't Vancouver the prettiest place on earth? Just wait until the roses in that garden bloom if you aren't entirely convinced.
The skirt is another giveaway from Erin, and I loved how such a fun and youthful pattern was matched with such a clean, professional fit. To play this up, I went serious for the top, with pearls and my Chanel-ey blazer (but not too seriously, obviously, as that just isn't my style), and more playful on the bottom with nude fishnets and socks with lace-up shoes (Can you call them Oxfords when they're clearly just orthopedic-esque in a similar style?), a look begging for a ruffle on my sock and some patent leather on my shoe.
I love the look of this blazer with the pearl necklace, they're both such a fun take on classic, ladies who lunch staples. Also, I don't really wear a lot of green, especially brighter greens, but I was happy to have this shirt in my wardrobe, as I think the color and style went perfectly with my skirt. My mom bought it, which is why it's out of my usual color scheme - Go Mom!
Excuse this major close-up of my face, but I wanted to show off the earrings, which are so great, and my new haircut! Look Mom, this is what the color looks like when not in crappy basement lighting transmitted through Skype video.

I'd like to take this time to really sing the praises of a nude fishnet. Nude tights can be really boring and induce flashbacks of those times when your mom insisted that you wear tights under your dress and they were always either that awful not actually nude but a sort of fake tan that didn't match your body color or you had snagged all of yours so you had to borrow your mom's but they were control top and super uncomfortable. But a nude fishnet? That's just fun, and a nice way to a little bit of craziness to an otherwise professional look.
Ankle socks, shoes, and skirts: I love you together, no matter what anyone else says.

Clarks.

Forgive my non-outfit post again, please. But when you sleep in someone else's house and rush to get stuff together the night before, you feel kind of haphazard and all underfed. These shoes though, make it all better. I LOVE boat shoes and these ones are so comfortable. They are a recent purchase from last weekend's shopping trip with Laura. The best part about them? They were on sale. And not just sale, people, SUPER sale. They were originally $70 and they rang up....
$17.50. 'Nuff said.

Until tomorrow. Libby

Hey, Mickey.

This week, my mom is at an accountant's conference in Florida. Okay, to be completely honest, she's at a controller's conference, but every time I say that, people either think I'm making a snide remark about her personality or that I've misheard her when she says comptroller. But, there she is anyway, minutes from Disney, surrounded by a lot of other people who are also really into calculations and budgets and organizations and file folders full of excel spreadsheets. Apart from learning valuable lessons like, there is nothing quite as bad as accountants singing karaoke, I'm not quite sure what she's doing with her time because she certainly isn't going to the parks, as she keeps reminding me. Still, there being so much discussion about Disney and all, and since I'm so happy with the general accounting profession today -- Why? you ask. Well, today, an accounting student filed my taxes for me and now I can wait patiently for the Canadian government to send me some cash, take that US, who instead asked for two whole dollars of my money -- I've decided to dress in honor of my favorite accountant, Momma Karen.Let's just be clear that my mom would never wear anything like this, nor would she actually like this outfit. Still, if you look closely at the shirt worn under the jean dress, there's the beloved Mickey Mouse, in all of his unofficially reproduced glory.
But let's talk about the dress - another baby doll dress with Doc Marten's. If I could recommend one piece of clothing for anyone to also have in their wardrobe, it would be a jean dress that they really love. I wear this to school, to the bar, to brunch, to the mall, to shows -- it's really lovely in its versatility and ability to look great with any pair of colored or textured tights.
Erin, on one of our first day's of outdoor photographs, wanted to take a picture by the totem pole, but I wanted to wait until my outfit seemed appropriate. Today, with my color scheme, especially the green tights, I thought I finally had an outfit worthy. I hope you agree.

Also, while on the subject of Erin, the adorable bow earrings were another score in her bag of giveaways. I love that I have so many new and new-to-me pieces to work with these days!
And, yes, you've noticed correctly that there is a scarf tied as a bow on the top of my head. It really is one of my go-to looks when I don't want to bother with my hair, like this morning when the power went off in my basement suite sometime in between when I went to bed and when my alarm should have woken me up. Originally inspired by the Marc Jacobs Spring collection that was inspired from the 1940s use of the head kerchief, it's really now inspired by its quick and easy solution to not so pretty hair.

We're Homeless.

Funny story. Well, kind of funny but funny in a thank-goodness-the-worst-case-scenario-didn't-happen kind of funny. Let's just say it's a good thing Jocelyn and I don't smoke on the front porch and her friend Jared hasn't been over in awhile.
So after we got our horrendous monster winter wallop snowstorm and then the snow FINALLY melted, I noticed our gas meter leaning to one side and that it looked like the bracket has rust through. So my cousin/best friend checked it out and we didn't smell gas, and our handy neighbor Herb checked it out and didn't find anything wrong, but advised that we should contact our landlord last week. Yesterday when my roommate Jocelyn called the gas company, they came out to check the situation and boy did they find a death trap!
Apparently, gas WAS leaking as evidenced by three bubble spots when he sprayed a solution. So here we are, gasless, hot waterless, and heatless. If only this was last week when the weather was GORGEOUS and we didn't need the heat. So in lieu of an outfit post, I figured I would alert you to my situation. Don't worry readers, we're safe now and not unknowingly endangering the neighborhood. And thanks to Laura and her roommates, I have a bed and hot water. I'll get back to posting outfits soon - definitely this weekend for my sister-in-law's baby shower. That one will be a special post - You'll se why.

Until tomorrow. Libby

Juliet Cape-ulet

Sorry for not posting yesterday, I'll address that in my next post and you'll forgive me. But I really like these colors together. If you don't remember, last time I wore these shorts, I wore blue tights and a black blazer - so I just switched it up a little. Also, this cape is so comfortable and so cute-ly named - Juliet Cape-ulet, hence the post title. I'm just not feeling very wordy today - sorry!
These picture were taken as an afterthought later in the evening - Thanks Laura! That's all for now, folks!

Until tomorrow. Libby

Team Little J

I think the dramatic -- no, we should probably say epic -- decline of Little J from a once promising designer to a drug dealer who broods in her room to the Dirty Dancing soundtrack has inspired me. I woke up this morning, looked at the very Blair Waldorf outfit I had set out for myself (yes, I set out my clothes the night before. But not only that, I also plan them out for the week on my post-it note widget), and immediately changed my mind. Not that Little J would wear this. The tights are a color, the hemline is not nearly short enough, and the socks should not be worn below the knee, but up to the thigh, with no tights underneath. And she'd probably never wear a polka dot, which is actually a good way to summarize all that is wrong with being too rebellious as a teen. This polka-dot cardigan is one of my favorites. Still, season one Jenny Humphrey with her crazy tights and bangle bracelets would have appreciated the styling.
Yesterday I mixed patterns in a completely socially acceptable way, and while the live response was positive, the blog response was not. The difference in opinion really reflects the commenting audience of the blog (my aunt and my mom, who commented on the phone when saying, "Well you know me, of course I didn't like it, but I still thought that you looked cute") and the fact that no one is going to walk up to you at school and say, "How are you liking Puddin'head Wilson? (it's weird) and, oh by the way, your outfit is totally lame." Despite the mixed response (or perhaps inspired by it), I decided to take the mixing a step further and add color. I usually have trouble finding outfits to wear with these tights because they are so insanely bright, which is unfortunate because purple is my favorite color.
Despite how completely unflattering knee socks may be, I'm completely in love with them. I think if I were to wear this outfit again, though, I'd change the shoes. Instead of highlighting the fact that I'm wearing knee socks, like a printed or color flat might, these black flats kind of make it look like I'm wearing boots. But I already own black boots. And if I wanted to wear them, I would, even if the zipper on the right one is totally broken.
Isn't the location of today's pictures great? It's in the middle of the Arts' building's main floor, and Erin luckily remembered it from invigilating finals in the building. As far as I can tell, it has no real purpose, but someone was napping on one of the benches when we arrived, so I guess that's something. That green seems far too distracting to do any real work, though. Erin is pretty much the unofficial official blog photographer for the Tights that Bind, Vancouver location. We were discussing off of UBC sites to feature in the blog, and I think if you keep reading, you may find yourself seeing a tour of this lovely, little, often-gloomy city, which would be a bit more exciting if the extensive television coverage of the Olympics hadn't already done something similar.

Cherry Blossoms

Today, to celebrate the arrival of Spring, I mixed two great patterns - the striped shirt and the floral skirt. The sweater, clearly a winter staple, works great with the so very Spring skirt, I think. This skirt has been one of my favorites and has shifted through my style fads from third year of college when I wore it around my hips with a black tank top over a white t-shirt, my locket, a gold headband, black leggings and black ballet flats.
So, I think the skirt has really adjusted well to the change in hemlines, the new climate, and the idea that black and white don't need to be layered to match the skirt, they can of course be striped. For those of you hesitant to mix patterns, I suggest either the stripe and the floral or the stripe and the polka dot. Start small - a shirt and a scarf or a shirt and a cardigan.
I kept the rest of the look simple, pairing it with grey tights and black boots and black and white accessories, only. My necklace, the silver chain tie, is one of my favorite pieces. I was doing work at a coffee shop one day when I complimented the woman next to me on the jewelry she was making, and she offered to custom make me a piece of my choosing for only twenty dollars. I have her email, so email me if you're interested.
Also, this post needs to give a special thanks to Erin, who once again photographed me so artistically. More importantly, though, she gave me a bag of unwanted or unneeded clothes and accessories over the weekend, including (among other things you'll see in later posts): This striped sweater, which is pretty much essential, and I can't believe I didn't own it, these earrings that might have been made specifically for this outfit, and, most unbelievably, this sunglasses.
I can't tell you how much I love these sunglasses. Ever since I saw Erin wear them to a morning showing of Breakfast at Tiffany's, I knew they were the just the Holly Golightly thing that I needed. Expect to be seeing a lot more of them (especially if the weather holds!).
